The French Wives – Exposure

Filed under: Features,Interviews — by Free Edinburgh Podcast @ 1:30 am

Another ‘Exposure’ for The List.  This time, The French Wives.

The French Wives – Exposure

Coming from the same mould of sunshine boy/girl pop of Belle and Sebastian and Camera Obscura that the usually dreich and dour Glasgow seems to embrace, The French Wives are a young band with heart, talent and a trombone. Still all at university, they combine studying with a rigorous workout on the Glasgow live scene that has earned many a plaudit along the way. Perfect for wooly jumpers your nan made, leaf tea and walking barefoot in Kelvingrove Park, here’s The French Wives in their own words. Oh, and none of them are French.

1) What encouraged The French Wives into making music?
Since the ages of about 15, the majority of us have been in and out of bands but by the time we were all up in Glasgow for university we were keen to start a ‘proper’ band and work on music we were all passionate about.

2) You all seem to be very young. How long has music been a part of your lives?
As mentioned, we all played in bands at school and a couple of us study music at the moment.  Music’s always been a part of our lives and we’re all into different stuff which gives us a large pool of influences to draw from.

3) Is there any intimidation being a new, young band on such an extensive, celebrated live scene as Glasgow’s?
Not really. We love playing live and are friends with lots of Glasgow bands so it’s something we look forward to. Its exciting more than intimidating. There are some really great bands in Glasgow and we are really pleased to be a part of it all.

4) I saw you guys up at Connect and was very impressed. How was the festival experience for you? And will there be anymore this summer?
It was amazing that we were even asked to play having only been together for a couple of months and the reception we got surpassed all our expectations.  The weekend was such a good laugh, the line -up was amazing and I can only hope we get the opportunity to play more festivals this summer – It’s a real shame that Connect isn’t running this year.

5) Are there any plans for an EP or album?
It is something we really want to do but our guitarist has moved to America for 5 Months so we are snookered, for the moment at least.

6) What does 2009 hold for The French Wives?
Hopefully by the end of the year we will have had the chance to release some material but for the moment I suppose we just want to keep writing and gigging as much as possible and try to improve as a band.

7) What’s the nicest thing anyone’s ever said about you?
We were reviewed for a gig at Nice N’ Sleazy’s a couple on months ago and were described as a ‘Steamroller’ of the Glasgow music scene, which was pretty flattering. I guess that was the nicest thing anyone’s ever said about us.

8) In five words, why should people listen to the French Wives?
Because we are dead good!
