Who Made Who – The Plot

Denmark’s latest musical impact on the world, Alphabeat, excited all who listened with infectious, unashamed pop that sought smiles regardless of any care for cool or respect. Their compatriots, Who Made Who, are less of a fascination though.

Blindly careering down the Hot Chip route of pseudoelectronica that seeks to appease both the indie kids and the dance fans alike, what could have been an interesting mix of styles, techniques and ideas becomes a tour de force of ennui when paid any sort of attention whatsoever.

Largely instrumental, it’s easy for this to fade into the background, offering a perfectly pleasing score for parties with more interesting happenings than just the music. Give this a little more than the thought taken to create it though, and dull bass lines can’t be improved by lackluster synths and the occasional spark of guitar.

Most irritating of all though are vocals which try in vain to offer an ethereal mystery, yet turn into an annoying whine when any form of range is suggested. It’s enough to make you want to kill the Little Mermaid. They may be cooler than Alphabeat certainly, but they’d never get a party started like them.
