Obama’s in the UK, there’s (un)civil disobedience on the streets of London, the world’s leaders are discussing how best to remove the shit from the fan and Matthew Horne is dying as we speak. But do I care? Well, yes. A lot. This is the future of our world. But this is a music blog, so I’m only going to talk about music things. And as such, here are words along those lines. (more…)

News – 18/03/09

Filed under: Music News — by Free Edinburgh Podcast @ 1:06 am

So what to talk about in this edition of music news? Brian Wilson mauling a pigeon? Lolly’s comeback? 50 Cent’s album of Gil-Scott Heron covers? No! None of these things, because none of these things happened! Not one. And if you think one did, you’re crazy. Crazy like a Fritzl. Anyway, here are some things that did happen, plus some amusing comments to go along with them. How about that? Yeah, I thought you’d be happy. (more…)

Michael, thinking of what could have been.

Michael, thinking of what could have been.

Just when you thought it was all over for good, music news has returned to EML! And contrary to unpopular (to me) belief, the reason for a lack of such news updates is not because of my laziness and the pressure of full-time education, full-time work, traveling to America and watching The Wire. No, it’s because absolutely nothing has happened in the music world these past few months. Nothing! If you think anything did, you imagined it. Probably in vivid detail, with all the beautiful colours and sounds you’d expect, but it didn’t happen. Things are happening now though. Big things. Exciting things. Incandescent things. And so, as is my duty, here are those things in word form. Enjoy! (more…)

Zombie Jesus - after the stone rolling.

Zombie Jesus - after the stone rolling.

Happy Halloween everyone!  And sticking with the scary theme, I thought we might talk about Michael Jackson.  Or more specifically, the attempt to get together over 1,000 zombies to perform that famed ‘Thriller’ dance routine in Nottingham.

The event, held as part of the city’s GameCentre festival, saw 1,227 volunteers dressed in the full Halloween get up fill the Old Market Square to break the world record for zombie dancing.  The previous record was a paltry 1,028, set just days before in Monroeville, Pennsylvania, a town now thought to be seething at Nottingham and all its inhabitants.  (more…)

Take That Europe!

14 years ago this November, a new way to give out small ornaments to pop stars for singing someone else’s song was born. For in 1994, MTV took one more step in its Risk like takeover of the world’s youth by organising the inaugural MTV Europe Music Awards in Berlin, Germany. And who was there performing at such a momentous moment in European music video history? Five sweaty English lads that’s who, as Take That stormed the stage, picking up the award for ‘Best Group’ along the way. (more…)

Madonna and Guy no more!!!

Filed under: Music News — by Free Edinburgh Podcast @ 7:54 pm

There is big news in the pop world this week. Big, big news. Huge in fact. I’m talking Gary Barlow face levels of largeness here. For the most decorated pop queen of them all, Madonna, has shocked the world and announced her split from husband, Guy Ritchie.

The news comes just eight years after a fairytale wedding in Skibo, Scotland, that sought to fuse US pop glamour with British film mediocrity for good. Alas, as with 99% of all celebrity marriages, things came to a head over numerous rows and arguments, with alleged reports of the pair being reduced to communicating through personal assistants (I do hope they got paid well). It’s unusual for Britney Spears to be in the news, but forsaking all the odds, the publicity shunning former teen-sensation appears to have found her way into various music publications over this past week. And why?

Thankfully it’s not for joining Madonna and Angelina in adopting African orphans to raise as her own. They have enough problems of their own already. No, instead Britney is going to be back on out televisions, but in more revealing detail than every before (unless you’ve seen those pictures of her coming out of a limo). (more…)

One of the five greatest pop artists ever.

One of the five greatest pop artists ever.

If the re-election of George Bush wasn’t enough to prove leaving things up to a public vote never works, the recently announced nominations for Best Act Ever at the upcoming MTV Europe Music Awards (which I’m assured is a worthwhile, unique addition to the award show roster) has raised more eyebrows than Roger Moore did in his entire stint as James Bond.

Whilst Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears may not be on everybody’s list of best artists ever (that’s ‘ever’!!!), it’s the inclusion of someone with a slightly deeper voice that’s raised the biggest debate. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, according to MTV watchers of Europe, 80s crooner Rick Astley, is one of the five most spectacular acts to grace the world of pop music. (more…)

Pop News 26/09/08 – Give Pop a Chance

What better way to start off this round-up of pop news than with the biggest pop star of them all?  I’m talking about former Beatle, Sir Paul McCartney, and his recent concert in Tel-Aviv, Israel.  Playing to 40,000 fans who have waited over 40 years to see him since Israel’s ban on The Beatles, McCartney treated the audience to classics like ‘Hello Goodbye’, and got them to sing along with John Lennon’s anti-war anthem ‘Give Peace a Chance’.  (more…)

If winning three VMA awards wasn’t good enough news for Britney Spears, she’ll be even more delighted to find out these past few troubled years of head-shaving, multiple marriages, rehab trips and questionable childcare have not been her fault. In an interview with NBC’s ‘Today’, the recent comeback (I think it’s the third one now) queen’s mother, Lynne Spears, expressed her own feelings on Britney’s turbulent times. “I took all the blame.” she said. “The personality I have, it’s always my fault.” I’m sure the insanity of being a 17-year-old global superstar millionaire, with unheard of power and influence in countries all over the world, so don’t worry too much Mrs. Spears.
